Started in 2013, Ouli is a Los Angeles–based design studio founded by Scott Barry and Brooke Intrachat. What started as an experimental retail showroom featuring artist’s edition home goods and the pair’s own designs has since transitioned into Intrachat’s own exploration into sculptural furniture design.
At Sight Unseen OFFSITE, Intrachat will present her debut furniture collection for the Canadian laminate company Arborite. The collection is inspired by ‘cyclical’ progress and re-invention. Or, the question of progress existing within aesthetics. These companions (furniture) can be seen as arbitrarily paired or arguably informed by one another — echoing the structuralist idea that form determines the position of each element of a whole.
The table, bench and chair are all new works, while the H is an homage to Guy de Cointet’s Preparation stool, rethought in laminate. Super satisfying visually and super challenging physically, the possibilities are a contradiction. The collection as a whole is inspired by similar contradictions, both visually, conceptually and physically, which brings the viewer back to the cyclical question: does progress exist within aesthetics?
