Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts–trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His practice is inspired by the studio’s location along the Missisquoi River.
For Sight Unseen OFFSITE, Johns will present one-of-a-kind pieces that are born from his reflections upon building contemporary furniture in a natural, rural environment. The furniture presented attempts to illustrate a conversation between the fabricated and the elemental, a dichotomy of control vs. imperfection and autonomy vs. collaboration. Assembled parts of stone, wood, metals or glass, support, imitate or reflect each other in functional compositions.
